By 1816, even before statehood, the Downings had arrived in the wilderness of Alabama, led by James Downing. His origins are the stuff of family lore and speculative reasoning, but he eventually fathered sixteen children. First settling in St Clair County, Alabama, the Downings moved into Coosa County and Calhoun County, until the devastation of war scattered the family and sent many to Texas and beyond.

Thoroughly researched and sourced, The Downings of Choccolocco: The Descendants of James Downing documents for the first time three complete generations of his known descendants, in both name and blood, along with a fourth generation-the Downings of Choccolocco, Calhoun County, Alabama.
